Along with the release of a major OS update, Apple also updates the compatibility with certain raw digital cameras. The Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.2 offers support for an additional ten cameras from renowned manufacturers such as Kodak, Sony and Canon.
Describing the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.2, Apple says on its Support page that the update “extends RAW file compatibility for Aperture 2 and iPhoto '08 for the following cameras:
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS/Kiss Digital F/1000D
Kodak DCS Pro SLR/n
Nikon D700
Olympus EVOLT E-420
Olympus EVOLT E-520
Olympus SP-570
Samsung GX-10
Samsung GX-20
Sony DSLR-A300
Sony DSC-R1"
Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.1, issued by Apple back in May, further extended RAW file compatibility for Aperture 2 and iPhoto '08 for a number of cameras, which included the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi/Kiss Digital x2/450D, a couple of Pentax cameras, and others.
Apple's professional photography application, Aperture, designed to assist professional photographers in post-production work, is currently available at version 2.1. The app introduces an open plug-in architecture allowing users to employ third-party imaging software right from within the program. Aperture 2.1 also includes the in-house-developed plug-in Dodge & Burn, which adds brush-based tools for dodge (lighten), burn (darken), contrast, saturation, sharpen and blur.
When launching Aperture 2.1, Apple also added support for more third-party software to be integrated with Aperture. The updated delivered image editing plug-ins for "localized editing, filters and effects, noise analysis and reduction, fisheye lens correction" and others. As of March 28, 2008, owners of previous versions of Aperture can upgrade to Aperture 2.1 for free.
The Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.2 supersedes previous versions, which means that supported cameras from previous versions are also supported in this version. The free update requires Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) or Mac OS X 10.5.3 (or later).
