World-renowned audio technical producers Digidesign have finalized a joint-force project in partnership with British loudspeaker experts, Professional Monitor Company (PMC). The result was at least marvelous as it consisted of a new series of reference monitors, professional studio-grade and developed with extreme caution and care for details.

The RM1 and RM2 embed the latest technology from both ?parents?: Digidesign know very well their job and what specs must a truly good monitor comply with while PMC come with a lot of manufacturing and design novelties and proprietary technologies.

As a matter of fact, the Advanced Transmission Line technology sports proprietary drivers and chambering in the RM series and involves patented dampening and sound absorption materials to be found only in PMC's products. The ATL tech allows a flatter frequency response at all volumes and higher pressure inside the ?boxes?so you'll have less distortion and won't need to seriously pump up the volume in order to hear a proper bass.

The RM series sport Bass Port Emulation even if they are actually closed boxes. The sound producer can now hear two versions of the sound being worked with: the flat response of traditional monitors and the bass-ported sound of most speakers on the market.

Both RM1 and RM2 sport a built-in DSP engine running on a fixed 48-bit value and being able to handle all the digital processing needed, from the very complex crossover-work for the speakers to delicate and precise EQ, Bass Port Emulation and other ?unseen? (yet very audible for the sound engineer) tasks.

The Class D amplifier within each monitor makes sure that the drivers operate at about 92% efficiency which is far superior to the usual 50% efficiency met in other similar devices. More sound and less heat allow all the other technologies to exert their full power and create a very good sound. Especially the voltage-sensing circuits play a very important role in the overall work as they actually allow flat and even frequency response at very low volumes as well.

While the RM1 sports 5.5' a woofer, its bigger brother, RM2 has a atypical 6.7? one and both rely on 1? soft dome ferroflui-cooled tweeters. The RM1 is amped by a Class D amp powering 80W LF and 50W HF; the RM2 is also bi-amped but with 100W LF and 50W HF.

Other detailed specs for the Digidesign/PMC units would refer to: -Balanced analog input (XLR) -AES 3 digital input (XLR)?accepts 44.1, 48, 88.2, and 96 kHz sample rates -AES digital input (RJ-45) -AES digital THRU connector (RJ-45) -HF control: adjustable from -4 dB to +3 dB in 0.5 dB increments -LF control: adjustable from -4 dB to +3 dB in 0.5 dB increments -Channel Assign: select which AES digital input channel (left or right) to produce -Gain Trim encoder: set the input sensitivity from 0 dB to -15 dB

Now, all this tech comes at its own special price: $2,498 for a pair of RM1 and $3.498 for a pair of RM2.
