Digia, the Finnish communications solution developer, has recently launched its latest mobile web browser for UIQ 3 handsets, called Digia @Web. Especially created for touchscreen devices, the new mobile browser is based on Webkit, the open source engine that Digia has ported to UIQ, and it's presented as a "browser UI that gives powerful and intuitive access to true web content."

Although users might have wished the new browser to be free, Digia is charging 8 Euros (11 USD) per license. But you can get a trial version of @Web from Digia's official website, to try it and see if it fits your "UIQ browsing needs." If it does, the 8 Euro fee will probably not mean much at all.

Aside from the obvious support for finger touch navigation, the user interface features of the browser include:

- accelerated panning;
- page rotation for both portrait and landscape browsing;
- finger-based page control;
- four zoom levels;
- the Address bar and Navigation bar are automatically hidden for a full screen browsing;
- smart Bookmark functionality that includes auto-sorting;
- Bookmark folders and Bookmark favicons;
- URL auto-complete (helped by the browser's history);
- a "page loading in progress" indicator.

The engine features of the browser include:

- HTML 4.01;
- JavaScript 1.5;
- realistic web page rendering;
- HTTP 1.1 with support for both secure and non-secure browsing;
- HTTP cache and HTTP cookies;
- Netscape compatible Plug-in interface;
- AJAX support;
- embedded audio (for mp3, wav or midi);
- external launch application programming interface (API).

Digia @Web is compatible with all of Sony Ericsson's touch-enabled UIQ 3 handsets, including: the G-series pair comprised of the G700 and G900 candybars, Sony Ericsson M600, Sony Ericsson P1 (reviewed by Softpedia here), Sony Ericsson P990, Sony Ericsson W950 and Sony Ericsson W960 (reviewed by Softpedia here). Of course, all the future Sony Ericsson UIQ 3 touchscreen devices will also work with the new Digia browser.
