Diablo and Monkey Island, One Game: DeathSpank

- Ron Gilbert prepares a promising RPG title

By: Calin Ciabai, Games Editor

In a game described as "Monkey Island meets Diablo" you have to put high hopes, since Ron Gilbert, the guy that worked for several classic LucasArts adventure games including Maniac Mansion or the Monkey Island series is involved. The game he's been working on is called DeathSpank and it will be an RPG adventure (how else could you name it, right?) that's going to be published by Hothead Games, a company that already signed Gilbert as creative
director.

DeathSpank is definitely not a new name for the people who like funny things, or at least Gilbert's fans: it is a character that has already appeared in a series of animated comics created by the man himself in collaboration with Clayton Kauzlaric. And, no matter if you know DeathSpank or not, one thing's for sure: this game is already a huge prospect. If you don't believe it, here are some official words:

"I've spent over four years trying to find the right publisher for this strange little game. Now that I've done it, you just know that somewhere four horsemen are saddling up," Gilbert said. "I got to know everyone at Hothead while I was helping with On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness. They really understand humor and being creative like very few publishers do."

Hothead Games, the company that has a very nice motto ("Gameplay Above All") prepared for Gilbert's arrival by ordering the finest morsels of jellied moose meat and lager brewed with water from the nearest available glacier, and responded:

"We're all huge fans of Monkey Island and we love Ron's unique vision and sense of humor," said Joel DeYoung, COO of Hothead Games. "Ron shares Hothead's goal of bringing much-needed humor and innovation into games, so having him here in Vancouver as our Creative Director is an excellent fit."

So stay tuned if a combination between Diablo and Monkey Island sound like a dream come true.
