Developer Blizzard has revealed that its upcoming hack and slash video game Diablo III will have a system of official auction houses that will allow a player to buy in-game items using real world money.

Blizzard says that it will not be offering any times directly through it and that it will be up to the players to decide which objects they are interested in trading and what prices they will set for them.

Two separate systems will exist, one dealing exclusively with in-game gold and another using real-world money.

Rob Pardo, who is the executive producer working on Diablo III, has said that the developer's objective is to create an official in-game economy that is totally secure and allows players to better develop their characters and, ultimately, have more fun with the game.

Blizzard will make some money from the auction house because it will get a flat rate fee for each object listing and for each sale.

The company will also charge players when they aim to cash out payments that they have received.

Everyone will have a number of free listings for each week, designed to encourage initial action in the system.

Blizzard says that each region and currency will have a separate auction house.

It seems that at the moment the developers are also thinking about allowing players to actually sell and buy complete characters, although a final decision will be made closer to launch date.

The money a player gets from objects sold in Diablo III can also be used in the official Blizzard Store and can even be used to extend a subscription to the World of Warcraft MMO.

Blizzard has also confirmed that players will need to be online and linked to Battl.net in order to play Diablo III.

The game does not yet have an official launch date but a beta is planned.
