Video game developer Blizzard has officially confirmed that it is working on a home console version of its upcoming Diablo III, with an executive from the company telling the audience that the project was proceeding at a good pace.

Micah Whiple, who is one of the community managers working at Blizzard, has answered queries from fans on Twitter, putting out a message that reads: “Yup. Josh Mosqueira is lead designer for the Diablo console project.”

Josh Mosqueira seems a weird choice when it comes to console development for Diablo III, given the fact that he has previously headed development of the Company of Heroes strategy game at Relic as design director.

The executive has not said exactly which platforms the game is being worked on suggesting that we might see versions of Diablo III on the PlayStation 3 from Sony, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft or even the new Wii U from Nintendo.

It is also not clear yet whether the console version of Diablo III will be released at the same time as the PC version or whether those who are only playing games on consoles will have to wait longer.

At the moment PC gamers and those on the Mac should get to play Diablo III in early 2012, which most fans understand as a March or April launch date.

Blizzard has been hiring people to work on the console port of Diablo III for quite some time but until now the company has refused to officially confirm the project.

It will be interesting to see how Blizzard manages to twist the mechanics and the interface of the game in order to accommodate the controllers and the limited resources of home consoles.

The company is also currently preparing to launch the second part of the Starcraft II saga this year and a new expansion for World of Warcraft.
