Mixed feelings from Bill Roper

Blizzard is responsible for quite a lot of franchises, from the stunning and well-paced RTS titles StarCraft and WarCraft, to the very successful and immersive Diablo series and the worldwide phenomenon that is World of Warcraft.

Now, as the company is hard at work with new iterations in the Diablo and StarCraft franchises, the original producer of the first two titles in the Diablo series, Bill Roper, has shared his thoughts on the next title in the fantasy RPG lineup. For those of you who don't know, he was the head of the Blizzard North studio, which took care of the Diablo series before it was taken over by the main company.

He went on to say that he did share a bit of the concern that a lot of fans had expressed on the Internet regarding the fact that it didn't have the same Diablo feel as the first two titles, but this didn't necessarily mean that it wouldn't be any good, as he did have faith in the team at Blizzard.

“I think that one of the things that we always tried to get across was that Diablo was Gothic fantasy and I think there was just a need that was put in there from the visuals that I didn't necessarily get,” Roper said. “I got it from the architecture and to a degree from the character design but not the feeling of the world. I can't say that I dislike it. I didn't look at it and go, oh my God that's horrible. But I looked at it and went, it's not really... to me as a player it just didn't really ring with Diablo.”

Blizzard has defended the artistic direction of Diablo III on many occasions, even launching a special T-shirt at last year's BlizzCon, which depicted some pink unicorns and rainbows and the Diablo logo, thus mocking fans who had said that the next title was too bright and colorful as opposed to the other iterations.

Hopefully the Blizzard team will create a great title, which will please almost all fans, and we won't hear any complaints from them after the game launches.
