Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls is getting its first major update on consoles, with the release of The Vault, an area previously available only for players who enjoyed Blizzard Entertainment's action role-playing game on PC.

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls – Ultimate Evil Edition came out on August 19, bringing the action role-playing game's first expansion to consoles, as well as delivering the game to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 home consoles.

The expansion continues the campaign, after the defeat of Diablo in the base game, with a new threat looming on the horizon, in the form of Malthael, the Angel of Death. The former Archangel of Wisdom takes the Black Soulstone, containing the essence of all seven of the Great Evils, and gamers have to once again embark on a quest to save the world of Sanctuary.

The update is mostly about greed and loot, and Xbox One and PlayStation 4 gamers will be able to collect legendary gems in the new area, as well as in other locations. The legendary gems are precious stones that can imbue the player with special abilities, when placed in rings and amulets.

Entering the new Vault area can be done by defeating Treasure Goblins, the random encounters encountered throughout the campaign, offering players a chance to be transported into the area which is traditionally the goblins' home, laden with untold treasure, and guarded by a new boss, the Baroness Greed.

The portals, however, don't open each and every time you slay a Treasure Goblin, and they can only be accessed in Adventure Mode, not while inside Nephalem Rifts or Greater Rifts.

New opportunities in Adventure Mode

Greater Rifts are a new and special kind of Nephalem Rifts, featuring an infinite number of levels, each one progressively more difficult than the last. Completing such an adventure will offer players the chance to choose from two rewards, upgrading their legendary gems or moving on to the next level.

In case you want to learn more about The Vault, you can visit the feature's announcement page from back in August, and you can do the same for Greater Rifts, on the respective page.

Among the additions is a brand new splash screen that will show up whenever a player logs into the game after a new patch has been installed, offering a quick overview of the new features and changes, which should come in handy if you're returning after a pause.

In order to update your game client, make sure you're logged into your Xbox Live or PlayStation Network account. Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus subscriptions are not required in order to download the update.
