A rollback would do more harm than good, according to Blizzard

Blizzard has confirmed that it won't issue a rollback for Diablo 3's North American servers, even if the gold duping exploit that affected the game's Auction House has caused a lot of damage to the economy.

Diablo 3 received patch 1.0.8 early yesterday but, right after the update hit the game's American servers, a major glitch popped up that allowed Auction House users to double their sums of gold, turning many into billionaires in just a few transactions.

This had a huge impact on the game's economy and Blizzard quickly took both the in-game gold and the real-money Auction Houses down for maintenance.

The studio has now confirmed on its forums that, after careful consideration, it won't implement a rollback, even if many players are calling for such a thing.

"At this time (and after careful consideration), we've decided to not move forward with rolling back the servers. We feel that this is the best course of action given the nature of the dupe, how relatively few players used it, and the fact that its effects were fairly limited within the region," the studio said.

Blizzard is now sifting through the list of transactions made on the Auction Houses and has begun identifying and punishing those who took advantage of the exploit.

"We've been able to successfully identify players who duplicated gold by using this specific bug, and are focusing on these accounts to make corrections. While this is a time-consuming and very detailed process, we believe it's the most appropriate choice given the circumstances."

According to the studio, a rollback would do more harm than good and it doesn’t want to upset players.

"We know that some of you may disagree, but we feel that performing a full rollback would impact the community in an even greater way, as it would require significant downtime as well as revert the progress legitimate players have made since patch 1.0.8 was released this morning."

As of yet, the Auction Houses for Diablo 3 on the Americas server are still offline.
