The expansion is also expected on the PS3 and Xbox 360 later this year

Blizzard has announced that Reaper of Souls, the Diablo 3 expansion that just came out last week, has already managed to sell over 2.7 million copies.

The sales figure relates solely to the PC and Mac versions of Diablo 3, as the console versions of Reaper of Souls will be released later this year, on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The expansion adds a new playable class, the unstoppable Crusader, a whole new act that takes players from the legendary city of Westmarch to the halls of the Pandemonium Fortress, as well as raising the level cap to 70 and adding one more deadly ability to each of the existing classes.

Another important addition in the expansion is the all-new end-game content, in the form of an Adventure Mode, allowing players to choose their own path across Sanctuary with complete freedom, Bounties, random objectives that award gold and experience, and Nephalem Rifts, fast-paced random dungeons that offer endless replayability and tons of loot.

The company has also revealed that the end boss, the Angel of Death itself, has already been killed more than 1.5 million times. Malthael claimed that no one could stop Death, but I guess nobody comes between Diablo players and their precious loot.

As it turns out, no matter how big you are inside a game, you're still going to end up a farming target, sooner or later. Of course, it's hard to blame the Angel of Death for dying so much, in the same manner that you wouldn't blame the Angel of Marmalade for being a bit chubby.

Blizzard celebrated the expansion's release with a host of launch parties all over the world, held in Seoul, Taipei, Warsaw, Stockholm and Los Angeles and livestreamed the events, the total number of Diablo 3 views on Twitch on launch day exceeding 2.4 million.

Blizzard also announced back in February that Diablo 3 had reached 15 million units sold across all platforms, and since then the number could only have gone up, especially since the base game was offered at 50 percent off just before the expansion went live.

Another strong incentive for players to return to the world of Sanctuary is the new Loot 2.0 system, a patch that went live before the expansion and "fixed" loot drops, greatly improving potential item quality, as well as the complete closing down of the auction house.

Diablo 3 will also reach next-gen platforms in the near future, as the PlayStation 4 edition is scheduled for this year and the Xbox One version is also being developed.
