Blizzard doesn't want to make things unfair

Blizzard confirms that it's going to tweak the Greater Rifts in Diablo 3 in the future, so that players are tested in a balanced and fair manner, without factoring in all that much their luck and the results from the random number generator (RNG).

Diablo 3, like its predecessors, bases its loot and level system on randomness by procedurally generating them every time a player jumps into the game. All these systems are based on RNG and it can often prove to be a cruel system for those wishing to score great loot or easier enemies.

With the new Greater Rift system, which provides even tougher challenges for those who got bored with the Nephalem Rifts in the regular Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls expansion, players are once again tasked with completing tougher and tougher levels, although in many cases the RNG factors in a great amount of the actual challenge.

RNG promotes replayability but shouldn't punish players

Blizzard has noticed the feedback from fans and confirms on the official forums that it's going to tweak the Greater Rift system so that the randomness won't punish players all that much, while still maintaining a challenge.

"In general, we use randomness in Diablo III to increase the replayability—Greater Rifts included. At the same time, we don’t want Greater Rifts to be so random that it feels like your success is completely at the mercy of a random number generator," a Blizzard representative says.

Improvements for the RNG in Greater Rifts are coming

In order to preserve the unpredictability but make things a bit less dependent on luck, Blizzard confirms that Greater Rifts are going to be tweaked in the future, after enough testing is performed internally.

"Ideally, the randomness within Greater Rifts should keep each Rift level feeling fresh and provide for some unexpected moments of excitement, as well as test how well a player is able to adapt to controlled amounts of unpredictability (i.e. randomness)."

"At the moment, though, we do feel randomness plays too heavy a role in Greater Rifts, and will be making improvements along those lines. No firm date on this, but just wanted to note that we’re on the same page," he adds.

Diablo 3 has already received quite a few big recent patches, so you can expect to hear more about Blizzard's plans with the popular dungeon crawler across PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox one in the future.
