“A Beautiful Day” marks the beginning of the end, delivers big time

Showtime is getting ready to close the book on one of its most popular scripted series of all times, “Dexter.” Last night marked the beginning of the end, as the first episode of the eighth and final season aired.

Called “A Beautiful Day,” it took fans by surprise by taking them to an even darker and more threatening place than ever (which is saying a lot for a show that focuses on the nightly exploits of a serial killer), while also heralding an epic finale.

Dexter is losing control and is no longer sticking by Harry’s Code. Fans know that this can’t but spell disaster for him.

I won’t spoil the season premiere for those who have not seen it yet, because you will surely find plenty of spoilers elsewhere online.

I will say this, though: critics and fans agree that “Dexter” is back to a very solid start, one that promises to offer a satisfying solution to the terrible predicament our favorite (anti)hero found himself in at the end of the previous season, when Deb killed La Guerta to protect him, thus throwing out the window everything she believed in.

Whether this temporary solution, as Dex himself refers to La Guerta’s death in “A Beautiful Day,” will work in his favor is highly questionable at this point.

Did you catch the season 8 premiere on Showtime last night? If so, what did you think of it? Let me know in the comments section below.
