Dexter is back and he’s more macabre and entertaining than ever

Many fans thought season 5 of Showtime’s “Dexter” lacked the brilliance of the previous 4 seasons. Others hated the direction the story took with Lumen. All of them were appeased by last night’s premiere.

As announced, Showtime kicked off a brand new season of “Dexter,” its popular killer series about a blood spatter analyst who moonlights as a serial killer / vigilante.

Picking up a few years from the events last presented, season 6 promises to be a return to form, to the dark humor and brilliance of season 1 and 2, which also seem to be fan-favorites.

Reviews for the first episode are already pouring in and, suffice it to say, critics are back again in love with the show, after the mild disappointment that was the previous season.

Not only is Dexter alone (and free) again, but the other story arcs show just as much promise as his own.

“Now that we’ve seen the season 6 premiere, which aired tonight, I have to say that things are looking up. In fact, this episode reminded me of everything I love about this series,” EW says.

Dexter, while still an attentive father (perhaps even more so now that he’s getting a taste of single parenthood), is no longer distracted by a significant other in the pursuit of his nightly “chores” – and this means writers can bring the fun back into his killings, critics point out.

“Dexter seems to be smiling again, and that’s when I love this show most – when it’s dark and funny. And I was not disappointed tonight,” a review in the LA Times Blogs says.

Granted, there were some corny moments (the high school scene which, as per some reviewers, was milked too much for laughter), but, in the end, there’s lots of promise there.

Some critics even believe season 6 may be the series’ darkest – and that includes season 4, which saw Dexter widowed in such a brutal and shocking fashion.

“‘Those Kinds of Things’ actually reminded me a lot of how Season 4 began, so I now have hope that perhaps this season will wind up taking us down just as dark, and world-shifting, a path as that season did,” IGN says.
