The new Devil May Cry, created by developer Ninja Theory and publisher Capcom, has created some pretty strong reactions from the fan community but the main developer working on the game says that the game should be judged on its own terms and not via comparison with other games.

Speaking to CVG about the Devil May Cry reboot, Tameem Antoniades, who is the leader of the team working on the game at Ninja Theory, stated, “We never set out to beat Bayonetta in combat. We're aiming to make the best DMC in the series.

“We want our combat to be better than the rest, because we take pride in our work. We want it to be accessible; to have all the arcane hardcore depths that you've seen in DMC.”

He added, “When Itsuno-san from Capcom and his crew come out, we spend days going over the combat system, and things they've added to previous entries that you won't find on GameFAQs.

“But in terms of feel, we're aiming this as something that's like a movie. Something with rules that make sense; that has characters that feel real, that you empathise with. For that reason, we're not looking at Bayonetta.”

The developer has reiterated the fact that Devil May Cry is a hardcore game and this means that it is mainly aimed at those players who are ready to give it the time and the attention it needs.

This does not mean that the reboot of the game should not try to get new players interested according to Antoniades, but that the mechanics of the game should be carefully calibrated in order to appeal in different ways to the various groups.

The new Devil May Cry is set to be launched on the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the Xbox 360 from Microsoft during this year, although the game currently lacks a clear release date.
