Publisher Square Enix has revealed more information about the upcoming Lightning Returns installment in the Final Fantasy XIII series, talking about the expanded options linked to the main character and about the more action-driven combat sequences.

[ADMARk=1]Lightning returns as the main character and she has access to a number of new techniques during battle and more ways to explore the surrounding areas, with customization options added to the weapons and the outfits, changing her abilities and also the way the heroine looks.

The evolved graphics also apply to the environment, which is bigger than in the previous Final Fantasy XIII games and offers more diversity.

The fact that the game takes place as the Final Fantasy XIII world nears destruction also means that some areas and quests are only open for a limited timeframe.

The new battle system for Lightning Returns keeps the core elements of the series but also opens up the fights in order to give gamers more control.

The development team at Square Enix also promises more options when it comes to connectivity and shared experiences.

Yoshinori Kitase, the producer working on Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, has stated, “We are pleased to reveal that Lightning is returning as the playable character in this title, and are excited to see how fans react to the more direct battle system and expansive environment that can be explored at will.”

Motomu Toriyama, the director working on the same title, has added, “Increased levels of player freedom, customisation and connectivity with the real world, will ensure that this concluding chapter will be an exhilarating finale to Lightning’s story.”

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be launched at some point during 2013, presumably on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PlayStation 3 from Sony, although Square Enix has not officially mentioned any platforms.
