Those enrolled with Apple’s iOS developer program can start submitting their iOS 4.2 apps, or application updates, starting now, the iPhone maker has announced via an email sent to registered developers.

A screenshot of the email in question, hosted at 9to5mac, reveals that Apple is informing devs of the availability of iOS 4.2 GM seeds, including iOS SDK 4.2.

“iOS 4.2 SDK GM seed and iOS 4.2 GM seed are now available from the iOS Dev Center. Build, test, and compile your apps with these new releases and submit them for review so they can be ready when iOS 4.2 is available for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch users,” Apple tells developers.

The message also includes a link to documentation regarding the ability to add new iOS 4.2 features to existing applications, “including the capability to print directly from the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch,” Apple says.

The company doesn’t forget to mention that, thanks to iOS 4.2, “iPad apps can now take advantage of multitasking, Game Center, iAd, and more.”

As noted by Softpedia on numerous occasions, the iPad is primarily targeted by the iOS 4.2 release scheduled to arrive via iTunes this month.

Version 4.2 of Apple’s mobile OS is known to bring all the existing features of iOS 4.1 to the iPad, plus the ones mentioned during the company’s Sept. 1 event.

Besides multitasking, AirPrint, Game Center and iAd, upcoming additions specifically targeting the iPad include Folder, AirPlay (wireless music, movie, and photo streaming), the unified and improved Mail inbox, the ability to search text within Safari, enhanced enterprise support, more accessibility enhancements, as well as keyboard and dictionary enhancements.

The public release of iOS 4.2 is expected to occur sometime in the coming weeks, shortly after the much anticipated release of Mac OS X 10.6.5, the fifth maintenance update to Apple’s Snow Leopard desktop operating system.
