Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who is the leading producer working on Resident Evil 6, has compared fans of the series with parents who are always concerned about the way their child is treated and by the way he changes as he evolves.

The developer told the PlayStation Blog that, “The way I always think of it is that if Resident Evil represents a child, then the fans and us as creators are the two parents. The resulting games are like the children that are born between both of us. And just like real parents, you’re not always going to agree on what is best for raising that child.”

He added, “we do always have our ear to the ground and listen to what the fans are saying and we try to take that into account when we’re making the game. But it’s our job to create a new gaming experience and to offer them something that’s fresh and challenging.”

The tension between the need to innovate and the player base’s need for familiar mechanics can lead to some negative reactions to new games in the series and a potential divorce between the two parents.

Kobayashi also made it clear that for Resident Evil 6 the development team at Capcom listened to the fan base and their desires, but charted its own path when it comes to the final product.

Resident Evil 6 was launched worldwide on October 2 and the reaction of the reviewers and the player base has been split, with a number of gamers praising the game and the sense of horror it offers while others have criticized it.

The new game ditches the familiar horror survival mechanics in order to appeal to a bigger number of potential players.

Resident Evil 6 offers three core campaigns with the best-known characters of the series and another secret one using Ada Wong.
