Resistance is probably one of the most successful shooter franchises developed for Sony's PlayStation 3. The first title, Resistance: Fall of Man, was quite innovative and managed to really exploit the power of the Japanese console, although it was one of the first titles launched for it. Its action was placed in an alternate reality in 1950's Great Britain, when the country was invaded by an evil virus called the Chimera, which turned people into blood thirsty creatures.
The
second game, cleverly entitled Resistance 2, takes Nathan Hale, the protagonist of the original game, out of Britain and tasks him with defending the United States from the mutant threat. Together with a squadron of soldiers who are immune to the virus, he will wage war against the Chimera across the US territory. The title was recently launched, and was met with critical acclaim for the very well polished gameplay modes, the great single and
multiplayer aspects, and the co-op campaign.
Ted Price, president of Insomnia Games, the studio behind this shooter franchise, talked about these gameplay modes. He said that they all come together to complete each other and to offer gamers a solid and full shooter experience. He revealed that Resistance 2 could be thought of as a compilation of titles, as each mode could very well stand on its own merits.
"Well, our goal was to create components that can stand on their own, but were also hooked together by the overall theme. And, certainly, I think we achieved the first, where all of the components do stand well on their own. As far as how well they hook together into the game? I think we did a good job; I think we learned a lot about how we can perhaps in the future do an even better job of making all the parts fit even more tightly together."
Price does have a point, the single player aspect follows the actions of Nathan Hale, the co-op mode tells the story of a separate Sentinel team, and the multiplayer mode offers a lot of features sure to entertain a lot of gamers. So, people might really see Resistance 2 as a compilation of three great modes, all bundled in one package.
Let's hope that Insomniac will continue to deliver great games and keep us entertained in the time to come. Until then, we should enjoy Resistance 2.
