Punch-Out!! has long been one of the games much loved by Nintendo fans and the remake that the title got for the Nintendo Wii was very well received by gamers and reviewers alike.
There was a certain old-time charm combined with solid gameplay mechanics and a good graphics update to the new
Punch-Out!! and a lot of people saw a definite potential for a proper sequel. And it appears that its developer, Next Level Games, is pretty much ready to bring it to life. If only someone asked it.
Bryce Holliday, who is the lead gameplay designer, talked to the Official Nintendo Magazine in the United Kingdom and told it that “The next Punch-Out!! would be different. Hopefully fans appreciate what we've done and that Punch-Out!! gathers strength in the marketplace as well as in pop culture. We've seen great online videos and fan content already. When the current title has gathered its new fanbase I would personally love to take the IP and the mechanic and give it a little twist.”
It seems that Next Level Games already has some interesting ideas, like support for competitive multiplayer or a new game mode allowing the player to create a new boss to face in
Punch-Out!!. Still, the development team knows that a sequel needs something truly new, a critical innovative feature able to attract both lovers of the old game and those who have only heard about it once it was remade for the Wii.
Of course, a sequel to Punch-Out!! can only arrive if Nintendo commissions one. The company has lately been interested in catering to the hardcore fan base of the company, which has been buying its products ever since the GameCube era, so a sequel might be a good idea. Let's hope we'll see Punch-Out Too!! (not the real name) in 2010.
