Vlc4iphone works only with jailbroken iPhone / iPod touch

VLC is an open source media player that plays just about everything you can feed it. Developer Zodttd thought: why shouldn't iPhone users be able to enjoy the offerings of this nifty media player? With this in mind, he crafted this nice port of the VLC player, dubbed it vlc4iphone, and released it as a private beta for folks to try out and offer feedback. Until it's made public, you will be required a donation to try it out.

Vlc4iphone is a port of the VLC media player. It is capable of drag-and-drop playback of pretty much every available video and audio format our there, including: MP3, XviD, FLAC, MPEG2, MPEG4, h264. iPod touch users are equally entitled to download and try the ported player out, in exchange for a small fee (starting at $5), Wired reveals.

You will need a jailbroken device, however, in order to run the app. Needless to say, Softpedia doesn't condone piracy or downloading non-Apple-supported software on your iPhone / iPod touch. Still, the benefits are obvious here: you won't need to convert any of the files you want to play-back on the iPhone anymore.

"The list of additions is pretty exciting," developer Zodttd claims. The new features are as follows:

- Compiled in FFMpeg! - MANY more decoders supported, including support for XviD, h264, MPEG4, FLAC, 3GP, MP3, MPEG2, AVI, and more! - Added volume control. - Fixed a warning when no media is found. - Increased the size of vlc4iphone's binary from 5MB to 24MB! Lots of media goodness packed inside!

Users should make sure they refresh the ZodTTD Beta Repo, the developer advises. Donating is the quickest way to get access to the ZodTTD.com Beta Testers Club. You will receive instant access to early releases of ZodTTD projects upon donating. Feedback in the beta forums is also appreciated.

The application weighs in at around 24MB. Click here to learn more about it.
