Survival horror video game Amy, which launched on the PlayStation Network and on Xbox Live earlier during the month, has been coldly received by both critics and the public, but the development team stands behind their title and has provided a strong defense of the experience.

Writing on the Facebook page dedicated to the video game, the developers at Lexis Numérique have said, “We wanted to thank those of you who bought the game and rated it on the Xbox market and the PSN Store. Indeed, AMY has been #1 in the daily XBLA charts since its launch in all major territories and players have rated it between 3 and 4 out of 5 on XBLA and more than 4 on the PSN despite the controversy.”

The statement adds, “As many of you have already heard, AMY is a HARD game. Some people totally disliked that while other really enjoyed it. We believe this is part of the survival experience we tried to build as we wanted the game to be challenging.”

Close to 10,000 people have rated the game until now at the Metacritic average is as low as 35 points out of 100 on the PlayStation 3 and stands at just 22 on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft.

The developers are saying that players who have problems with the difficulty level of the game should first play it on easy and see how they fare before trying tougher difficulties.

They also say that combat, which has been criticized for the lack of hit detection, should be avoided as much as possible and has been designed as a last ditch option.

Critics have stated that Amy suffers from obscure puzzle design, game freezes and glitches, lack of Artificial Intelligence when it comes to characters and enemies and poor design of the game levels.
