iPhone Dev Team member Musclenerd has just announced the upcoming release of a jailbreak for the iOS 5 beta Apple seeded to developers this week. The hack will be tethered, as revealed on Wednesday when the hacker confirmed that Limera1n was used to achieve the hack.

Earlier this week, Musclenerd wrote on Twitter: “iOS5 jailbroken on ipt4g […] via limera1n + tethered boot..not too many surprises.”

The ‘tethered’ hack means that a device shut down will require it to be connected to a computer on the next reboot. The computer also needs to be running limera1n in order to restart the iPhone / iPod touch to jailbroken state.

Minutes ago, Musclenerd tweeted again. This time, he seemingly confirmed his group’s plans to release the exploit publicly.

However, the hack targets those who registered their device’s UDIDs with an Apple developer account.

“Last day of WWDC...seems as good time as any to release tethered iOS5 jailbreak (for Mac owners with registered UDIDs),” Musclenerd wrote.

It is unclear who will be rolling out the jailbreak, since Musclenerd doesn’t mention the actual name of the tool.

Limera1n is not in the group portfolio, even though this was the exploit that made it all possible on iOS 5.

The iPhone Dev Team’s tools include Redsn0w and PwnageTool. These are likely to be updated with new code that can jailbreak iOS 5 IPSWs.

Although Musclenerd specifically targets this upcoming jailbreak at those registered with Apple, there is a fair chance others will pick it up and jailbreak their non-registered iOS 5 beta.

As reported earlier this week, anyone owning a supported device can easily download the iOS 5 beta IPSW from the web, install it, and bypass the activation procedure by simply tricking the software into displaying a notification and then the springboard.
