The infamous iPhone Dev Team has rolled out an updated version of its Redsn0w jailbreak tool to assist iPhone 3G and iPod touch second-generation device owners in hacking their units.

According to the Dev Team, the tool can only be employed on Mac OS X machines for now, while those relying on the ultrasn0w unlock are advised to stay put for now

Only via PwnageTool will they be able to keep the ability to unlock, therefore these users should wait for a PwnageTool update from the hackers, according to their latest blog post.

“We’ve released a beta version of redsn0w for the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at FW 4.1 or 4.0. It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve been using since the 2.x days,” the Dev Team writes.

“It does not include the SHAtter exploit developed by pod2g.  Nothing new is revealed to Apple with this jailbreak,” the hackers elaborate.

Then comes the warning for those looking to preserve their unlock, or at least the ability to jump from carrier to carrier in the future:

“IF YOU USE THE ULTRASN0W UNLOCK, PLEASE WAIT FOR PWNAGETOOL TO SUPPORT 4.1.  DO NOT USE REDSN0W.  That’s because to use redsn0w at 4.1, you need to already have updated to official 4.1 from Apple.  If you do that, you lose the ultrasn0w unlock (possible forever),” the Team’s warning goes, as usual.

According to the infamous group of hackers, further testing is needed on the Windows version of Redsn0w for iOS 4.1, but it’s coming soon, they say.

Notably, iPod touch owners wielding a an “MC” model will need to do a tethered jailbreak, something the Team apologizes for.

“Consider rolling back to a FW supported by jailbreakme.com or spiritjb.com,” their advice goes.

Finally, the supported devices and jailbreak instructions are dished out.

Currently, redsn0w 0.9.6b1 supports only  iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G, Mac OS X, and iOS  4.1 and 4.0 firwmare bundles from Apple.

Users simply launch the beta redsn0w, select their stock 4.1 or 4.0 IPSW, select “Install Cydia” and click “Next”. Users need to enter DFU mode to install the jailbreak.
