Still-tethered jailbreak enables the “Custom” button for Windows, fixes bugs

A new version of the Redsn0w jailbreak tool has been released and although it still provides a ‘tethered’ hack for most users (the exception being old-bootrom iPhone 3GS owners), it does deliver a few additions worth your attention.

The iPhone Dev Team updated their blog a few hours back with the announcement that Redsn0w 0.9.9b9b enables the “Custom” button for Windows users. The updated tool also made the 3GS week 35 warning a more explicit part of the process.

On Twitter, Musclenerd said: "3GS old-bootrom users please apply latest redsn0w 0.9.9b9d before installing ultrasn0w compatibility update."

However, soon after people began using it, some problems emerged. So the Dev-Team updated their post with the following notice:

“For those Windows users encountering launch errors due to the self-update check, please use this version instead for now,” said the Team, providing the necessary link.

Then, users started signaling yet another problem:

“iPhone3GS owners in our comments section below noticed a problem with the untethered jailbreak available for the old-bootrom 3GS. We’ve corrected that problem in 0.9.9b9d,” the team said.

“If you have an old-bootrom 3GS and have already used last night’s redsn0w on it, you can re-run it again without losing anything. Just use this new version, go to Extras->IPSW and manually select the 5.0.1 IPSW, then go back and Jailbreak it again (but you can uncheck Cydia because it’s already installed),” explained the hackers.

Using bold characters, the Team ended their update with the following warning: “This is still a tethered jailbreak for all except old-bootrom 3GS users.”

The iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev are currently working to deliver an untethered jailbreak to the iOS community for devices running firmware 5.0 and above.

The hack is almost completely finished, with hacker Pod2g posting timely updates on his progress every day.
