Musclenerd is informing his Twitter followers that redsn0w 0.9.10b8 is now live with the ability to “backup those priceless activation tickets many are grabbing today”.

An update on the Dev-Team blog (likely also authored Musclenerd) reveals that “redsn0w 0.9.10b8 adds the ability to backup arbitrary directories or files from your device into a zip file on your Mac or PC.”

The hacker highlights the new button as Extras->Even More->Backup, adding that “it requires your device to be jailbroken with the afc2 service enabled (most jailbreaks include that).”

“By default it will backup your activation records from /var/root/Library/Lockdown, which is useful for everyone taking advantage of today’s SAM unlock using Loktar_Sun’s trick,” Musclenerd explains, promising to elaborate further in a future post.

As usual, the Dev-Team offers the official download links for the latest version of redns0w on its blog. Both Mac and Windows users can download redsn0w 0.9.10b8 straight away.

The SAM unlock (Subscriber Artificial Module) is the result of painstakingly hard work carried out by Loktar_Sun from weiphone.com who reportedly “pursued an earlier lead that many […] gave up as a viable exploit.”

According to Laforet writing over at Singularity, “Your phone will work normally with your SIM card and that SIM card ONLY since we have tricked iTunes to think that ICCID is one of the intended carrier's. The phone can be rebooted and connected to iTunes freely without losing the ‘unlock’, at least for now.”

“Since it does not involve emergency numbers or IMSI spoofing it will not have any of the issues associated with SIM interposers. Tested working on iOS 5.01 but should work with tethered 5.1 too,” explains Laforet.

The post contains full instructions on how to unlock iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS under iOS 5.0, iOS 5.0.1 and iOS 5.1.
