The infamous group of hackers known as the iPhone Dev Team has opened a new topic on its blog, intending to provide regular updates as soon as they can relate the new iPhone 4.0 software to its jailbreak tools. Softpedia doesn’t condone practices that involve hacking Apple’s products. Our site posts these updates as informational news pieces only.

iPhone OS 4.0 is the latest version of Apple’s iPhone OS, which runs on both iPhone and iPod touch devices, as well as Apple’s tablet computer, the iPad. Set to be released this summer to the public, iPhone 4.0 delivers an additional 100 new features to end users. These include key enhancements such as multitasking, the new Game Center, iAds and an array of new APIs for developers, and many others.

iPhone OS 4.0 is likely to be released as a free software update for all iPhone owners, while iPod touch customers may have to pay an upgrade fee. Not all devices will support the entire set of changes brought by the new software. Multitasking is one such feature, which older-generation devices will not be able to handle.

The iPhone Dev Team’s latest post, entitled “iphoneos 4.0 on the horizon” goes, “Some interesting features were revealed in today’s preview of iphoneos 4.0. We’ll use this post as a placeholder for discussion about these features and how they relate to the jailbreak. Also, it seemed like a good idea to move away from our last post, which was made on April 1 for a reason.”

The Team’s April 1 update was, inevitably, an April Fools prank suggesting that it had obtained valuable information regarding an upcoming iPad model. At the time, the group said, “The iPhone DevTeam has been passed confidential internal information relating to the next version of the tablet computer the ‘iPad.’ An upcoming redesign of the iPad tablet computer will miniaturize the device so that it will be able to be carried on the user’s person (such as a pocket or small bag). Also a radical move to add a minimum of a 13 kbits/s speech codec to the miniaturized tablet variant is planned.”

The hackers claimed that, “The inclusion of the voice codec will allow the user to directly utilize the GSM nomadic network, allowing person to person communications directly using your mini-iPad from anywhere dramatically speeding up the usual typed email or instant messaging capabilities that the iPad offers today.” Finally, it alleged that, “It is the plan of the iPhone DevTeam to target this device as soon as it is released.” Evidently, the news was fake.
