German telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom has joined forces with CipherCloud, a startup whose solutions are designed to enable organizations to adopt the cloud without having to worry about security, data privacy, and compliance risks.

The encryption solution offered by Deutsche Telekom and CipherCloud is designed to protect data not only on the cloud itself, but also on its way to the cloud.

The project is financed by T-Venture and it reflects the German telecom company’s commitment to data protection and security.

The solution will be demonstrated at CeBIT 2014 between March 10 and March 14 at Deutsche Telekom’s stand (C26). The demo will focus on showing how Salesforce data can be protected.

However, in the future, T-Systems will offer corporate customers servers that run CipherCloud, enabling organizations that have avoided migrating their systems to the cloud because of security concerns to make the move without having to worry about their data.

The encryption provided by CipherCloud doesn’t impact data structure and operations. However, it does give organizations full control of data in cloud applications, regardless if they’re public, private or hybrid.

CipherCloud solutions are already utilized by 2.5 million customers from all over the world. Users are allowed to decide which data they want to encrypt and protect, and for which of their applications.

The gateway enables them to select what data they want to protect. Encryption takes place in real time, and it’s automated. The data stored in the cloud is decrypted only when an authorized user retrieves it. Furthermore, the sensitive information organizations store in the cloud is not accessible to the cloud provider.

In Germany, providers need to adhere to stringent regulations when it comes to data protection. However, with CipherCloud’s solutions, the data is not available to third parties even if they’re not required to comply with German legislation.

Last month, CipherCloud appointed Bob West as the company’s new chief trust officer. West previously served as chief information security officer at Fifth Third Bank and Bank One, senior systems officer at Citicorp. Before joining CipherCloud, he served as CEO of Echelon One, a risk consulting company he founded.

“I am pleased to help advance CipherCloud's commitment to delivering trust in the cloud,” West said after being named chief trust officer.

“The acceleration of cloud consumption by enterprises has created a unique role for trust. Without it, adoption would stall. I look forward to helping our customers and partners remove the privacy, regulatory, and residency barriers to transforming their business in the cloud.”
