German telecoms company Deutsche Telekom has admitted to suffering a data breach. The company wasn’t hacked or anything. Instead, it has learned that some of its staff members had access to employee records that should have been anonymized.

According to Handelsblatt (report in German), Deutsche Telekom admitted there has been a privacy breach and apologized to employees.

The firm’s representatives say only a limited number of employees had access to the data and there’s no evidence that any of them have misused it.

An independent auditing company is being called in to investigate the incident.

Handelsblatt highlights that the incident is embarrassing for the company, especially since its CEO, Rene Obermann, has been trying to enhance privacy protections.

Three years ago, one of the company’s security chiefs was sentenced to prison for spying on journalists and staff representatives.
