Research firm ABI Research has just announced that Deutsche Telekom is the leader in its latest Operator Matrix, an analytical tool aimed at giving a “clear understanding of vendors’ positions in specific markets.” According to ABI Research, while Deutsche Telekom reached the leading position in the Operator Matrix, Orange Group and Vodafone Europe managed to be placed on the second and third places, respectively. Vendors enter the top based on important parameters like “innovation” and “implementation” on various criteria.

Aditya Kaul, ABI Research practice director, stated “Deutsche Telecom’s leadership role and commitment to the global e-sustainability initiative, coupled with its unparalleled green R&D efforts, led it to grab the top spot. Orange has shown initiative in terms of measuring its own impact through innovative KPIs and internal tools, while Vodafone should be commended for its green efforts despite its size and footprint. Its also one of the few operators to state that 80% of its energy consumed is in the network itself.”

The research firm also noted that for this matrix, under “innovation,” the degree in which operators make use of applications or other technologies so as to deploy greener networks is taken into consideration. At the same time, it also looked into their impact on green innovations, their smart grid networks and other green technology innovation, their green R&D efforts, as well as in the use of innovative metrics for measuring carbon/energy reductions.

As for “implementation,” ABI Research focused on green mobile network infrastructure, the “greenness” of their IT operations and on how management is applied to green initiatives. Moreover, it also took into consideration handset, battery and accessory recycling activities, as well as green transport fleet and logistics, operators' green buildings and facilities, their use of green packaging and more.

Those who would like to learn additional details on the “top ten” firms in this Vendor Matrix can find all available details in the “Western European Green Operators Matrix,” on the research firm's website here (registration required, although it is free).
