The video also explains why Phobos is so close to Mars

Destiny looks gorgeous and was universally praised for the high level of quality of its visuals and for its incredibly realistic sky boxes ever since its open beta.

Developer Bungie has released another episode in its ongoing Ride Along series, where Community Managed Deej takes a stroll around Mars, joined by Jason Sussman, one of the artists who worked on creating the world, and Craig Hardgrove, a planetary scientist who worked with NASA on getting the Curiosity Rover to Mars.

The hour-long video showcases the many beautiful vistas of the Red Planet, proving the painstaking detail in which everything was rendered by the art team.

Although Destiny was generally panned by critics and players alike for the lack of context for everything you are doing and for the fact that there simply isn't enough lore available when actually playing the game to make it feel truly immersive, the art team worked really hard in order to provide a pretty realistic depiction of Mars.

A very interesting journey

One of the things that instantly come up in the video is the fact that Phobos, one of Mars' moons, is depicted much closer than it actually is in real life.

Sussman brings up this fact and states that, although Hardgrove pointed it out the first time he looked at what the art team had done, Mars and Phobos are so close for fictional reasons that are yet to be revealed.

Phobos is really close to Mars in real life, but it's also very small and constantly getting closer to the planet. Scientists predicted that, in about 50 million years, its trajectory will make it crash into the surface of Mars, and the forces of gravity will gradually tear it apart.

Hardgrove has mentioned that the effects of Phobos beginning to disintegrate are already visible in Destiny, as there is a significant amount of debris floating around the moon in-game.

The lengthy video showcases many of the yet unused assets present on the surface of the planet and reveals a ton of behind-the-scenes information on the process that led to the creation of the human colonies and outposts on Mars, and is definitely an interesting watch for anyone interested in the lore of Destiny.
