Activision's freshest IP, sci-fi first-person shooter / massively multiplayer online game mashup Destiny, is hugely popular, managing to attract over 5 million unique viewers on Twitch in its first week alone.

Destiny takes place in the future, following mankind's desperate bid for survival, with a mysterious cosmic force known as The Traveler protecting its last remaining city.

The action is set across six planets in the Solar System, and apart from standard aiming and shooting, developer Bungie also slipped in some role-playing game elements, introducing a new dimension to the classic first-person shooter gameplay dynamic.

A lot of action on Twitch

According to publisher Activision, Destiny managed to garner more Twitch attention than any other console game release of the year, bringing in an impressive 5 million unique viewers in its first week of existence.

Furthermore, the company reveals that Destiny content was viewed on Twitch by nearly 20 million people, with an aggregate of 240 million minutes of gameplay streamed and watched, marking a resounding debut for the title.

Although it's difficult to compare Destiny to other such titles' performance on Twitch, since the statistics are not publicly available, it's still an impressive feat. Actually, even more so, since other Twitch partners don't usually brag about their viewership, so there's no frame of reference other than the big figure.

Destiny boasts some impressive numbers

The shooter was developed by Bungie, the famed makers of Halo, so that was to be expected. Activision also endowed the team with ample funding, aiming to make Destiny its third major franchise, following in the footsteps of Skylanders and Call of Duty, and so far it seems to be working.

The company has reported that the game already made $325 / €251 million in sales, in merely five days, showing an impressive momentum, the result of month after month of hype build-up and other marketing efforts, in addition to the actual game-making.

Bungie has informed that Destiny players already logged over 100 million hours in-game, as well as participating in over 137 million activities, by the time of the announcement, making the new game the most played, in order to the best-selling and most pre-ordered new IP in video games history.

Destiny was released on September 9, and it's currently available on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. For the time being, there is no word on whether the game will be making its way to PC.
