Bungie has confirmed that Destiny, its upcoming multiplayer-only first-person shooter, will allow owners of the game on the PS3 or Xbox 360 to transfer their save game and characters to the PS4 or Xbox One, respectively.

Destiny is set to debut later this year for last and current-gen platforms, and Bungie has emphasized that it wants to offer a lengthy multiplayer experience that will last 10 years.

Even so, if owners of the PS3 or Xbox 360 upgrade their platforms to the PS4 or Xbox One, Bungie wants to make sure they don't lose their progress and characters.

As such, it's confirmed to Polygon that a transfer tool will ensure that their save games can be accessed on the different consoles, but only within the PlayStation and Xbox brands.

"We're interested in making sure that last gen character can move to next gen," investment lead Tyson Green said. "A lot of people are going to buy Destiny on PS3 or Xbox 360 and then get a PS4 for Christmas. Don't tell me I wasted those last 100 hours there. So we're really interested in supporting that. Our longer-term platform plans, I couldn't speak to right now. But we don't want to lock people in."

Bungie can't comment about the transferring of save game files between the different platforms, like from the PS3 to the Xbox One or the Xbox 360 to the PS4, as the decision is still up to Sony and Microsoft for their consoles.
