Players can find their characters across PS4 and PS3 or on Xbox 360 and Xbox One

Bungie has confirmed that its upcoming Destiny shooter allows Guardian characters created by players to be accessed on both last-gen and current-gen consoles belonging to the same family (i.e. Xbox and PlayStation).

Destiny is one of the most anticipated games of the year and developer Bungie is currently holding a special beta stage that, right now, is offline for maintenance on the PS4 and PS3, before making its appearance on the Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Even so, as some beta players have no doubt observed, the Guardians they create on the PS4 are available in the PS3 version of the beta if they log into the same account.

Bungie has acknowledged this feature on its blog and revealed that Guardians are available on the same console family, meaning characters are the same on Xbox One and Xbox 360 or on PS4 and PS3, provided you log into the same account.

"As you’ve discovered, as your Guardian evolves it will be able to travel from one generation of console to the next. Just like hopping worlds, you can use the same Guardian on Next Gen and Legacy Gen consoles – so long as you stay in the same system. Ergo, you can move from PlayStation to PlayStation and from Xbox to Xbox, but not across product lines," Bungie's David Dague says.

The studio's David Shaw also mentions that this is the reason Bungie has forced players to use their Xbox Live Gamertags or PlayStation Network IDs when playing Destiny, as the game needs to track their progress across all platforms.

"Our service is built with flexibility in mind. As a player of Destiny, you have a Bungie account that’s bound to your PSN ID or your Xbox Live Gamertag, instead of a specific generation of device."

Bungie also mentions that the level cap in the beta stage has been implemented so that players still have things to explore in the actual game when it debuts this September. However, they can still continue to upgrade their weapons and gear throughout the test phase.

"Because the Destiny Beta is just the beginning of your adventure," Dague has said when asked about the level cap. "To truly become legend, we’ll see you in September. Once you reach the level cap in the Beta, you can continue to upgrade your weapons and gear."

The Destiny beta goes back online on July 23 for the PS4 and PS3 and also goes live for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One platforms.
