The development team at Bungie currently working on Destiny says that it has explored various possible universes for its product and that it has decided to use a mix of science fiction and fantasy because it offers more freedom for future additions.

Joseph Staten, who is a writer and a design director working at Bungie, tells The Official Xbox Magazine that, “We thought of a good handful of other genres as well. We’ve had a pretty long pre-production period and we explored everything from straight-up fantasy to something a little bit more modern to many, many other things as well.”

The initial leaked images taken from Destiny suggested a game that used some of the futuristic concepts from Halo, the previous Bungie series, mixed with visual cues that reminded fans of Warhammer 40,000.

Staten adds, “Ultimately we gravitated towards this mix of science fiction and fantasy because it gave us this freedom. You saw small things like the prevalence of cloth in the game, a lot of characters have capes or cloaks and the combatants have cloth as well.”

Bungie has announced that it will craft a complex universe for Destiny, with full backstories for the main characters and a central mystery that will be revealed as the player progresses through the campaign.

Recently, the company has registered five new Internet domains linked to its new game, which might mean that it is planning for spin-off products to be launched later during the life of the series.

Destiny will use core first-person shooter elements, but Bungie has big plans to innovate a genre that has lately become focused on core fans and traditional mechanics.

The team has already announced that it has plans to launch Destiny on the PlayStation 4, with exclusive content for the next-gen Sony device.

It will also be offered on the unannounced Xbox 720 from Microsoft.
