The competitive Player-versus-Player encounters in Destiny, Bungie's upcoming multiplayer shooter, aren't mandatory and won't interfere with the Player-versus-Environment (PvE) encounters in the new title, according to the studio.

Destiny is the next ambitious project from Bungie, the developer that delighted millions of fans from around the world with the Halo series and is now looking to strike gold once more alongside new partner Activision.

After sharing a few details about the game's launch in September and the beta in July, Bungie has now talked a bit about the competitive encounters in Destiny and how they aren't mandatory or forced onto players who just want to play alongside friends against the artificial intelligence and explore the story.

When asked about competitive encounters, Bungie explained on its website how PvP isn't necessary in the game.

"The whole game has the potential to be multiplayer now – even though you can play as a fireteam of one. We’re going to assume that you’re asking about competitive multiplayer – what some refer to as PVP, or player vs. player," the studio said.

"You can expect that your fellow Guardian will be among the most dreaded opponents you’ll face. You can expect that you’ll have to embrace that fight willingly. It will never ambush you when you’re battling the true enemies of humanity."

The different factions in the game will have an impact on the PvP encounters, but players will have to explore just what makes them tick and what motivates them in the ongoing battles.

"In truth, each faction will have their own motivations for sending you into the wild on a variety of vital missions. They’re not just cheering sections for a competitive fracas. You’ll find their agents in their tower."

"You’ll discover their missions while you’re patrolling the wastes. You’ll detect their influence over other heroes of the City. Everything you do in the game will add to your understanding of the story and the world in which it takes place. Factions are colorful strands in that tapestry."

Bungie also confirmed that the PvP encounters would be showcased at E3 2014, possibly during one of the press conferences from Microsoft or Sony. Also, on the show floor, attendants will be able to try it out before the beta stage in July.

Expect to hear a bit more in the following weeks, especially since the beta needs a concrete launch date, ahead of the game's debut in September for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
