Activision says that the recently launched futuristic first-person shooter Destiny is well on its way to becoming a billion dollar franchise and hang out with the big boys, Call of Duty and Skylanders.

The company has already declared Destiny's release the "biggest new video game franchise launch in history," revealing that the game managed to sell over $500 million / €387 million worth of stock to retailers in just one day.

"Since the beginning, we've been confident that our investment and belief in Destiny would pay off. But not many people believed we'd be able to say it did so on day one," Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg told Videogamer.

Furthermore, Destiny is also the fastest-selling digital console game of all time, the publisher reveals.

"This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world. The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment's Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up," Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick states.

Big words, but backed up by some pretty strong sales data, especially considering the way Hearthstone took off on Twitch and how massively popular the game has become, in spite of it being part of a genre that was considered a social stigmata for a pretty long time, collectible card games.
