HashBang Industries has acquired Desktop Remind, an application that embeds your calendar on your desktop, above your wallpaper but below your desktop items. The new version of the software, released just days ago, has changed the application's name to iDeskCal, also adding a new icon to go along with the major overhaul.

According to the folks at HashBang Industries, the company is offering registered users of Desktop Remind who purchased the software after 3/19/2009 (two months before the release of iDeskCal) a free upgrade to iDeskCal and all other registered users upgrade pricing.

As noted above, iDeskCal embeds one's calendar on their desktop, over their wallpaper but behind their desktop items. This way, the application enables users to quickly find out exactly what is on their agenda. iDeskCal is user-configurable too. Users can place it exactly where they want on their desktop, and configure the font and font color to suit their needs, according to HashBang Industries. It even works with multi-monitor setups, the company reveals, pointing out to the feature highlights:

– 14 day fully functional Free Trial;
– Embeds directly into the Desktop;
– Configure Font and Font Color;
– Add/Manage Events & To-Do Lists quickly;
– Keyboard Shortcuts;
– Supports Multiple Monitors;
– Run in the dock, status bar, or both;
– Localized in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

iDeskCal is an Apple staff pick, currently topping the downloads list over at the official Apple website. iDeskCal 2.0 requires Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or later, weighs in at 1.2MB and is a Universal Binary, good for running on both PPC and Intel Macs. One user license costs $12.99 to buy. Use the link below to download the fully functional, 14-day trial version of the software, upgrade to the new version, or immediately buy the app for your Mac.

I downloaded this software, paid the fee, and used it happily for about a month. Then I downloaded the update.

BIG MISTAKE. My MacBook, running the latest version of Leopard, started acting like a WIndoze machine inflicted with an overload of spyware. I had to restart in safe mode to uninstall the software. Wondering whether the file had become corrupted, I removed iDeskCal and downloaded anew. No fluke, my MacBook is unusable with this software installed.

The company has not responded to my request for assistance. Even if your computer handles this software OK, you should think twice about people who do not respond to their paid-up customers.
