Officials from Desertec Industrial Initiative started talking about their ambitious strategy of opening a solar power plant in Morocco, which will contribute to the development of alternative sources of energy with its initial 150MW capacity, which officials plan to expand to 500MW in a few years.

The representatives estimated that the new project will be completed in up to four years, and it will imply an investment of €600m.

According to The Handelsblatt newspaper, earlier this week the company's officials managed to establish a partnership with the Algerian government.

Based on their agreement, it will receive three power plants in different stages of development, facilities which include the Morocco solar power factory and another project located in Tunisia.

The power plant is only a part of their long-term objectives. The Desertec Industrial Initiative plans to bring North African energy to power European consumers, through high voltage direct current lines.

In order to accomplish this ambitious plan, the company will invest €400bn in this entire project which relies on solar-power usage.

Once this target will be achieved, some experts in this field of activity say that Desertec will have the proper means to respond to 15% of the entire energy demand on the European market by 2050.

Such a fulfillment should support the development of quite impressive profit margins which will most likely cover the investments which have been made throughout time.

Also, it will help the company redefine its position as one of the top players on the market of alternative, sustainable energy.

Experts think that this accomplishment will be a decisive factor in a process freeing the European energy infrastructure from its oil and coal-burning dependency.

The DESERTEC concept is keen on obtaining clean, sustainable energy in Northern Africa, the Middle East and Europa using solar power plants, wind parks and hopes to be able to ensure the transmission of this electricity to a large range of consumption facilities.
