Launched a few months ago, MySpace News was described as a potential rival for Google News, the service owned by the search company which is currently one of the top players on the news market. Yesterday, the rivalry between
MySpace and Google got enhanced by an announcement of the social networking service that plans to introduce an AdSense-like technology but with more evolved functions. Since Google is the main company when it comes to online advertising, MySpace's product would compete directly with the Mountain View firm. Getting back to the news services, MySpace first launched its solution as a beta with a limited number of functions.
Nowadays, MySpace News is pretty anonymous and only a few users access it. Just have a look at the top commenters on the official page of the service and you'll notice that "angle," the user who is one of the addicted fans of the service posted only 43 comments to the news.
But today Michael Arrington from TechCrunch noticed some new features included in MySpace news which are supposed to make the technology more competitive for the similar services on the market. "MySpace has started to add links to the property. Display ads like the one above are appearing throughout the site, and there is now a link to "news" on the MySpace home page as well," he wrote. "News items also now have comments, which as far as we know were added today. A look at the site shows a healthy discussion taking place on the top news items."
Google News has always been criticized by the competitors for receiving content from thousands of sources and for receiving money without paying for the stories it receives. However, Google News is an important source of traffic because the search giant also attaches a link to the original author of the articles, allowing the users to visit the main website to read more information on a certain topic.
