Specialists say women in their 40s and 50s are the ones most vulnerable

A new research says that depressed women who are in their 40s and 50s are 2.4 times more likely to suffer a stroke than women not affected by said condition.

This conclusion was reached after a team of researchers spent a total of 12 years collecting information concerning the health condition and psychological wellbeing of over 10,500 women whose ages ranged from 47 to 52.

Interestingly enough, the link between depression and a higher risk of suffering a stroke held up even when variables such as age, socioeconomic status, lifestyle habits and overall health were also taken into consideration, Daily Mail says.

“Doctors need to recognize the serious nature of poor mental health and what effects it can have in the long term. We may need more targeted approaches to prevent and treat depression in younger women,” study leader Caroline Jackson reportedly said.
