Celebrity Denise Richards is now the proud foster mom of a black Labrador mix puppy which ended up in an animal shelter following hurricane Sandy's hitting the US East Coast.

The actress got the puppy from the North Shore Animal League America shelter in Long Island this past Saturday, when both she and her daughters decided to help out with the relief operations, sources say.

“Day off tomorrow. Heading to an animal shelter, to help out. Over 600 rescued from the hurricane. My girls are coming to help too,” Denise Richards tweeted before visiting this animal shelter.

The actress now hopes that others will follow in her footsteps and adopt other pets that have been rescued in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy.

“There are so many puppies at the shelters. I would strongly encourage you to adopt!” the celebrity wrote in a message to the general public.
