Demi Lovato has been through hell but she's now better and stronger than ever, ready to talk about her experience in the hope that it will help others in the same situation get over it in one piece.
Her fans must already know that, at the height of her fame, Lovato was struggling with an eating disorder, low self-esteem, bi-polar disorder and a self-harm problem.
She's been on the straight path for quite some time, but she still has days when she can't believe the worst is already behind her.
The latest issue of Self Magazine
brings an interview with the new X Factor judge in which, among other things like dishing some details on Simon Cowell and Britney Spears, she talks about her old demons.
One of them was self-harming
“There were times I felt so anxious, almost like I was crawling out of my skin – that if I didn’t do something physical to match the way I felt inside, I would explode. I cut myself to take my mind off that. I just didn’t care what happened. I had no fear,” Demi says for the magazine.
Not only did she have no fear but she also had a very distorted perception on reality, mostly because of her then-undiagnosed bi-polar disorder.
“Finding out I had a real emotional disorder helped me put together the pieces of the puzzle. I remember being on my tour bus thinking, My life is so awesome right now, but I’m so depressed,” she recalls.
“Then, a few days later, I’d be on top of the world. It was really confusing. When I got diagnosed, my life made more sense,” Demi explains.
She still has days when she feels down or days when she thinks she should just skip meals because she's too plump, but she's tackling them one at a time, reminding herself where she came from and why she's in a much better place now.
In the same interview, Demi also notes that her perception on beauty has changed a lot because of what she's been through, as also did her self-esteem.
Today, she doesn't need to be on the red carpet “all dolled up” to feel pretty: she feels beautiful and confident when she's happy.
