Former Disney star continues to inspire, is a real role model for girls

Late last week, Maxim magazine revealed its annual Hot 100 list, which aims to celebrate both great looks and professional / personal achievements. Demi Lovato is at number 40 on that list and, in a short accompanying interview, she stresses that real beauty can only come from inside.

The former Disney star has had her fair share of hang-ups, both in her career and on a more personal level, but she’s emerged a much stronger and more confident woman out of all them. These days, she stands out for the remarkable efforts she makes to be a real role model and an inspiration for all her young (and not only) female fans.

Having checked herself into rehab for a variety of issues, including an eating disorder and a tendency to cut herself whenever she felt powerless in a situation, Demi’s public rhetoric often touches upon topics like body image, self-esteem, confidence, and real beauty.

It’s admirable that she continues to do the same in this interview, especially since it’s with a magazine that, despite all claims to the contrary, remains anchored in the physical realm in the way it focuses on appearance and having the “perfect body.”

“To me, sexiness stems from being confident and comfortable in your own skin,” Demi says, in excerpts obtained by Us Weekly. She considers her backside her strongest suit but, at the same time, she says she places more value on her personality than on her figure.

“The ability to work at bettering myself – I'm not perfect, no one is, but I'm working at becoming better everyday. Everyday I can look back and say I'm in a better place than I was yesterday,” the singer continues.

With her, taking every day as it comes and working on improving her life are of paramount importance: as she’s the first to admit, Demi is an addict, and not just to illegal substances or alcohol.

She struggled with eating disorders and very low esteem for years before rehab and, to this day, she still finds it almost impossibly easy to revert to those destructive patterns, including that of cutting herself when she needs to feel like she’s in control.

Literally, Demi has to work hard every day to keep all this in check, to keep reminding her that she’s a good, smart, and beautiful person who needs to treat herself with as much respect as others treat her.
