New player expected in September

Undoubtedly, Apple is currently dominating the MP3-player market with the iPod products. And that happens for good reason, too, since no other company so far has succeeded in providing the same features as the iPod. With all that, Dell, is attempting - once again - to do just that, by releasing a digital music player meant to compete with Apple's famous iPod.

According to an article in The Wall Street Journal newspaper citing several Dell officials, the Round Rock giant has been testing such a device for quite some time now, and we should expect a working model to become available in September.

Little is currently known about Dell's upcoming player, but it seems that it will feature a small navigation screen (which means it will not compete with the iPod Touch), and basic button controls to scroll through music playlists. If these rumors are accurate and the features do materialize, Dell's upcoming digital music player might not turn out to be a very strong competitor for Apple's iPod. But that doesn't necessarily mean it won't be a successful product.

One of the most interesting features the device will come equipped with will be its Wi-Fi support, aimed to enable users to connect to various online music services. On top of that, Dell is also reported to be working on a software for a range of portable PCs, which will make it possible for users to organize and download media content from several online resources.

Another strong point working in the advantage of the upcoming product could also be its price tag, which is expected to be set at around $100, or even below that. Still, let us not forget that Dell has had previous experience with the MP3-player market, sometime in 2003 and that, back in those days, the company's DJ Ditty player turned out to be a huge disappointment and was consequently taken off the shelves. Regardless of that, we can only hope that, this time around, Dell will be capable of putting out there an overall better product.
