AMD has scored another important victory against the processor leader Intel, PC maker Dell announcing that it will use the Sunnyvale company's processing solutions in its servers.

Dell made this announcement in the press release containing the financial results for the first quarter of 2006.

"In the enterprise, we will launch new ninth generation servers featuring Intel's Woodcrest microprocessors. Dell will also introduce new AMD Opteron processors in our multi-processor servers by the end of the year offering a great new technology to our customers at the high-end of our server line," said Marty Seyer, AMD senior vice president, Commercial Business.

AMD responded to this decision and made a statement regarding the future presence of dual-core Opteron processors in Dell's servers.

"We welcome Dell, and Dell customers, to the world of AMD64. Dell is a customer-focused company and we're pleased to see that they are listening to their customers and providing them the choice of innovative AMD products. We look forward to working closely with Dell in bringing the benefits of AMD leadership in performance-per-watt solutions to Dell customers," Seyer added.

News.com quoted Dell's CEO, Kevin Rollins, as saying that Dell's initial embrace of AMD will only involve servers with four processors and that there are no plans to sell AMD's chips in desktop PCs, notebooks or other servers at this time.
