Dell has announced that starting this October, the company will ship servers based on Intel's dual core Xeon processors.

Dell is readying four models of servers: 1U PowerEdge 1850, 1855 blade server, 2U 2850 and 2800. Aside from these models, whose prices range from $2,448 to $2,748, Dell will also launch two workstations, Precision 470 and 670, with prices of $2,479 and 2,779 respectively.

In this way, Dell is lending Intel a helping hand, the biggest CPU manufacturer having to deal with a fierce assault coming from AMD's Opteron processors, present in an increasing number of servers.

Although Dell is no longer offering Itanium based servers, the company has never employed AMD's processors because of the alleged poor price/performance ratio.

Dell is one of the companies subpoenaed by AMD in the lawsuit with Intel and Dell's officials have confirmed that they will provide AMD with all documents related to the business relation with the producer of the Xeon processors.

AMD has also announced new models of its Opteron processor.
