New Bay Trail tablets apparently don’t offer advanced Linux support

The Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet is an 8-inch device available with an Intel Bay Trail Z3750 processor and running Windows 8.1 Pro out of the box.

But some owners on the Ubuntu Forums have been wondering if the tablet could be made to run Ubuntu, and as it turns out it can. A German Dell 11 Pro user has posted a video on YouTube showing the device booting the OS via USB.

The description says “This is the new Dell Venue 8 Pro booting Ubuntu (13.10) from USB. As of now this is only working with frame buffer, no built in wlan, no sound, no camera. However the touchscreen is working.”

Nevertheless, he gives no indication of how he managed to pull this.

Browsing through the thread, I found that user migntom has posted a guide for installing Ubuntu 13.10 on his Dell Venue 11 Pro tablet that runs a Core i3 processor.

Unlike the Venue 8, the 11-incher offers a selection in the chip department, including Pentium 3560Y, Core i3 4020Y, Core i5 4210Y and Core i5 4300Y.
