The tablet’s screen is comparable with an AMOLED display

Since spring is upon us, more and more tableters might be tempted to take their devices out into the sunshine, in the park or out for brunch, as a reading companion.

UMPCPortal has taken five tablet models from different brand vendors and has put them to the test, in direct sunlight, to see which tablet offers the best user experience regardless of lighting conditions.

Not being able to see what’s up on your tablet’s screen can be pretty annoying, not only if you’re outside, but also if you’re in a room with lots of windows and there’s a lot of sunlight coming in.

Sunlight readability on LCD has been proved to be quite deficient and smartphones with a nice AMOLED screen might be recommended for those who want to read the next chapter in their favorite book in the park. Better yet, an e-ink based eReader might prove to be the most optimal solution, not to mention the cheapest.

The test included the Lenovo Miix 2 10, ASUS Transformer Book T100 and 8-inch ASUS VivoTab Note 8, Toshiba Encore WT8 and Dell Venue 8 Pro.

Cutting the story short, two of the 8-inchers stood out in the test, the Toshiba Encore WT8 and Dell Venue 8 Pro. The Lenovo Miix 2 10 proved to be quite terrible and the ASUS Transformer Book T100 wasn’t too far behind. Last but not least, the ASUS VivoTab Note 8 showed the lowest performance out of the three 8-inchers.

You can see from the pictures posted by the publication, in the middle from left to right: Dell Venue Pro 8, Toshiba Encore WT8 and ASUS Vivotab Note 8. On top, we have the ASUS T100 and Lenovo Miix 2 10.

Anyway, out of the two tablets, the Dell Venue 8 Pro proved to be the best in terms of outdoor readability. It’s contrast is pretty proficient plus one can’t even make out the frame, black remains pitch black.

The Dell Venue 9 Pro is also compared with the Nokia Lumia 925 which is a smartphone with a beautiful AMOLED display. The differences between the two aren't too big, both in sunlight and normal lighting conditions.

On top of that, the Dell Venue 8 Pro comes equipped with a nice back, that’s not too slippery and won’t accommodate fingerprints as easily as the other tablets might.

The publication notes the Acer W4 tablet might also be an interesting tablet to test in natural lighting conditions, since it reportedly has a very bright screen.
