In an earlier piece we gave you a tour of the world’s thinnest tablets which are currently available for purchase today.

By surveying the market, we found that the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet was one of the most compact, coming in at 0.25 inches / 6.4 mm, while the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and 10.5 followed close by with 0.26 inches / 6.6 mm.

But what if we told you that there’s a tablet even skinnier than the ones mentioned above? And the company sitting behind this wonder is none other than Dell.

Introducing the world's thinnest tablet

The device maker has just pulled the veil off its Venue 8 7000 Series of tablets, which take advantage of a high-res 8.4-inch OLED display.

The new family of tablets comes equipped with an Intel Atom Z3500 processor which pertains to the Moorefield family of processors.

But the most interesting part comes now, the tablet arrives with a super anorexic (6 mm / 0.24 inches) frame which puts to shame most of the tablets we have seen so far. It’s no wonder Dell calls it the “thinnest tablet in the world.”

However, that’s not the only thing that makes this little tablet special.

Dell also throws in 3D camera technology

The Dell Venue 8 7000 Series is one of the first tablets to arrive with Intel’s RealSense camera platform. We realize some of you might not be familiar with what RealSense actually is, so we’ll explain it for you.

RealSense is a system that takes advantage of a 3D camera that works in concert with Intel’s dedicated software that brings about 3D gesture based input.

The technology is somehow similar to what you’d expect to get from Leap Motion or the Microsoft Kinect controller.

Basically, the technology will allow you to interact with your tablet without you actually touching it. For example, you could use the system when you want to snap a photograph and you need to adjust the focus after the image has been captured.

As for raw specifications, the tablet arrives with an OLED Infinity Edge-to-Edge display offering 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution, so in theory the multimedia experience should be awesome.

Under hood lies a Moorefield processor but we’re not being told how much RAM the tablet is fitted with. This information will probably be revealed in the upcoming weeks.

The Dell Venue 8 7000 Series tablet should become available for purchase in time for the 2014 holiday season, but we don’t know for what price. It probably won’t be too cheap.
