A lifetime dillema

Rumors that Dell will use AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) chips in its PCs are loose on the Internet for a while. However, the company has never taken this step because of its special relation with Intel, which is its only processor supplier. Some believe that Dell receives discounts on Intel chips as a result of its loyalty to the world's largest processor maker.

Now, officially, Dell said that it won't use AMD chips in its computers, wishing to put and end to speculation. Also, a public announcement was made by Dell officials earlier this year.

Taiwanese companies build a lot of the systems sold by Dell and other PC companies, so they usually get a preview of such major changes as Dell's switch to AMD chips would be. The press in Taiwan contradicts Dell official statements saying that the company already sent a notification to the manufacturers that desktop and notebooks PCs based on AMD processors will begin to be produced.

Recent facts show that AMD is begging to catch up with Intel, even outselling the giant in the USA retail market, as earlier this month. Also, Intel began a counterattack, to gain back its revenues and market share.
